Health & Safety

Jana O’Brien is our Health and Safety Coordinator, who is responsible for all health files and health plans, teaching safety protocols, and ensuring Active Supervision is being accurately followed. She keeps all Health Files up to date and tracks the children’s health appointments and the critical time allotment for having health requirements completed by Office of Head Start Standards. Daily safety implementations employed at Head Start of Laramie are under her guidance along with monthly practice of various Safety Drills such as fire drills and tornado drills. This includes teacher training, visits to classrooms to explain the drills to the children, and parent notifications of drills. Jana also does our ongoing Active Supervision training, helping to make the safety of our children foremost among the responsibilities of all staff.

Germ Fairy

Sometimes, Jana dresses up as the Germ Fairy and makes visits to our classrooms to teach and practice good hygiene routines. She teaches children about the importance of washing hands to keep germs away, how we should all wash our hands, and other ways to maintain hygiene.  â€‹

The Health and Safety Coordinator visits the classrooms monthly to teach a health lesson to children including stories, songs, and poems. The Health and Safety Coordinator also sends home literature to the parents about the lesson taught with an activity that will count as In-Kind, for parents to do with their children at home.

Active Supervision

Active Supervision at Head Start of Laramie is how our children are monitored throughout the day. Active Supervision is using techniques such as zoning, listening, scanning, and engaging with the children to keep everyone safe.
